Introduction

Learn more about hosting a private gaming server on the 1&1 Cloud Server platform, including how to set up a gaming server, the advantages and disadvantages of running your own gaming server, and which of the most popular video games offer the ability to run as a private server.

What is a Private Game Server?

Some online multiplayer games offer the ability to host a private game server. Instead of connecting to the game company's hosted servers, players connect to the private server in order to play the game.

Please note you will still need to own a copy of the game for your PC or gaming console in order to play on a private server.

Advantages to Hosting Your Own Private Server

Running your own private server lets you control every aspect of the game. Depending on the game, you may be able to:

  • Add or remove mods.
  • Control who accesses the game, with a player whitelist and/or blacklist.
  • Charge players for access to your server.
  • Customize the landscape and/or use custom maps.
  • Customize the characters.
  • Create custom rule sets (for example, set friendly fire on or off).
  • Use admin-level or moderator controls (sometimes called "ops").

Charging Players a Fee or Subscription

Before setting up a subscription model for your game server, please consult the Terms of Service for the game. Some games allow players to charge a fee for access to their private servers. Others do not.

Which Games Allow Private Servers?

Some of the most popular games which offer the ability to run a private server include:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)
  • Minecraft
  • Ark: Survival Evolved
  • World of Warcraft
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Terraria
  • Rust
  • Battlefield

Bethesda has also announced that Fallout 76 will include the ability to host a private server.

Building a Game Server

There are two options for building a game server:

  • New server: Some games are available as a ready-to-use application which can be automatically installed on the server when it is built.
  • Existing server: Games can be manually installed and configured on an existing 1&1 Cloud Server with Root Access.
